StressCheck Tutorial: Computation of Cross Section Centroid

Abstract: Using intrinsic functions SPCTRX, SPCTRY and SPCTRZ to compute the global X, Y, Z locations of a cross section centroid. The locations are computed through the application of a “dummy” traction (with X=SPCTRX/SPAREA, Y=SPCTRY/SPAREA and Z=SPCTRZ/SPAREA) to the surface or surfaces representing the cross section, and then performing a load check to return the X, Y, Z locations of the centroid.

This software provides the engineer with the means to conduct solution verification in an extremely straightforward manner by simply increasing the degree of the element, monitoring convergence and using Richardson extrapolation reliably to estimate the error.
